The Selfie Project
What is a self-portrait?
A pictorial or literary portrait of oneself, created by oneself.
This project is all about you. Who ARE you. How can you describe yourself visually?
This project uses Photoshop to combine a layer blending of images that represents your life, family and friends.
Start by….Listing as many things as you can think of that describe you, your family, your friends, your heritage, your personality, your career and life goals etc.
Then begin to find the images needed.
Objective(s):
• Use photography as self-expression.
• Use Photoshop to build a meaningful, personal and unified image out of at least 8-10 different pictures.
• Use different sizes, overlapping, opacity and layer blending modes to produce a unified image with a strong focal point.

A digital self-portrait that describes them as unique individuals. Students must use the Photoshop techniques: Layer Masking, Adjustment Layers, and Layer Blending Modes to create layered composition.
Students must find a minimum of 8 - 10 objects, places, and people that are important to them. New digital photos can be used, as well as old photos they have taken already. Since the layered digital selfie is composed of many elements, strong layout design is essential. Students should think of the final image with these design goals: Shout — a strong focal point which is the primary image, in this case their own image; Speak — middle ground elements; and lastly, Whisper —background elements. The use of contrast, proportion, color, shape, and value (lower opacity), are the means students use to achieve the design objective. The design principle Unity is also stressed by means of repetition of color, shape, and overlapping elements. |
